Managing Consultant, Social Performance (Personal Services)



ERM is seeking a Managing Consultant to join our Social Performance team in Vancouver. This role will work across social performance, stakeholder/indigenous engagement, and human rights services for the mining industry and other sectors. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing our clients' commitments to responsible business operations, ensuring that social considerations are integrated into capital project delivery, site operations, and corporate planning.

ERM has a leading global Social Performance practice. Candidates should have the skills and experience to provide high quality analysis, recommendations and insight that is grounded in international good practice and an understanding of regulatory and financing requirements.  The successful candidate will be responsive to rapidly evolving legal, regulatory and social expectations, and bring the insight and creativity required to meaningfully partner with our clients. This is a full-time, permanent position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise, leadership and project management for a variety of projects related to mining, oil and gas, power, renewables, and other sectors. Expected project delivery activities may relate to socioeconomic impact/risk assessments; community/ Indigenous engagement; human rights; multi-stakeholder engagement, participatory processes, and facilitation; developing management strategies and systems; report writing, reviewing and quality control; and providing insightful and actionable recommendations to clients.
  • Be self-sufficient and able to complete projects and tasks with limited oversight, engaging with internal stakeholders (e.g. team leads, project managers) as required to ensure work is aligned with ERM and client's needs. Willingness and ability to contribute to other Social Performance work will also be important.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with ESG, sustainability reporting, and compliance teams to ensure alignment and integration of social performance objectives.
  • Mentor junior consulting staff to support development of their skill sets including technical skills, project experience, and general consulting and decision-making skills.
  • Contribute to proposals and business development, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates in accordance with ERM's policies and processes.
  • Build relationships with clients to support new and repeat business.
  • Work with other global ERM resources to deepen relationships with ERM key clients to expand ERM's profile and market share through a combination of excellence in technical delivery and business development support.

Qualifications and Desired Skills

Technical Skills/Experience

  • Experience in planning and implementation of Indigenous and stakeholder engagement to support extractives industries, capital projects and permitting/regulatory processes in Canada, including a proven ability to draw on different engagement tools/processes, with varying levels of participation, to drive desired engagement outcomes.
  • Experience evaluating and managing social and human rights risks as related to mining and other extractives industries.
  • Experience advising clients on requirements and best practices with the aim of managing social risk and supporting local benefits.
  • Demonstrated experience applying international standards and guidelines (e.g., IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, ICMM Principles) is an asset.
  • Proven ability to translate technical content (science, engineering, etc.) into accessible communications materials is an asset.
  • Facilitation experience is an asset.
  • Experience with ESG data analysis and sustainability reporting, and an understanding of how these processes connect to social performance.
  • Experience developing proposals, budgets, and workplans is an asset.
  • Project management skills/experience is an asset.

Consulting Skills/Experience

  • Versatile, responsive, and results-oriented, with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional communication and technical writing skills, with a keen attention to detail and understanding of how to frame deliverables to suit the specific need/audience.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and complete deadline-driven tasks; be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines; work closely with clients, team members, and other stakeholders; maintain flexibility; and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Business acumen to understand/communicate business risk and challenges and recognize commercial opportunities.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse team including mentorship and/or line management of more junior staff.
  • Commitment to safety and following established health and safety protocols.
  • Willing and able to travel domestically (and, if required, internationally) is preferred.

General

  • Post-secondary degree in international development, law, public policy, political science, human rights, geography, public health, economics, social science, resource management, anthropology or similar. Masters degree (or higher) is preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience including demonstrated ability to lead discrete scopes of work; manage teams and budgets; and provide technical guidance, oversight, and quality control. Experience in a consulting role is an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Working ability (speaking and writing) in other languages, especially French or Spanish, is an asset.  
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

For the Managing Consultant, Social Performanceposition, we anticipate the annual base pay of $95,564 – $116,400 (CAD).  An employee's pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs.  We also may have instances where employee's fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are NOT bonus eligible).
