Junior Certification Officer - Naval Architect Co-Op

Position Summary

Thales Canada is seeking a motivated Engineering student for up to an 18-month internship/coop (starting May 2025) with the AOPS and JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) program. As a Junior Certification Officer and Naval Architecture Intern, you will support critical certification activities for Royal Canadian Navy vessels while gaining valuable experience in naval engineering and regulatory compliance. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop professional skills on one of Canada's premier defense projects while working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists.

Certification Management

• Assist in identifying and tracking re-certification requirements for naval vessels
• Support the coordination of Classification Society surveys and inspections
• Help maintain comprehensive documentation of certification activities
• Contribute to the development of efficient certification renewal processes
• Track certification issues across vessels to ensure timely resolution

Naval Architecture Support

• Participate in naval architecture evaluations and assessments and load testing of fitted equipment
• Support investigations of structural and mechanical defects
• Assist in developing technical solutions for identified issues
• Contribute to the review and improvement of Technical Data Package

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Participate in all re-certification activities, including scheduled surveys by the Classification Society and material re-certification, ensuring comprehensive documentation within the Class maintenance program planning tool.
• Support Thales Service Delivery by assisting with certification-related activities, including periodic and annual surveys and inspections conducted by the Classification Society.
• Assist in maintaining a tracking system for certification issues across all vessels, ensuring timely identification and resolution.
• Participate in the assessment of technical risks related to Conditions of Class, contributing to the overall safety and compliance of the vessels.
• Conduct investigations either on board the ship while alongside or using the Technical Document Package (TDP).
• Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers and ship staff to support the investigation and resolution of defects.
• Develop Job Instruction and Statement of Work (SOW) to support the resolution of defects.
• Collaborate with the Engineering team to assess the impact of engineering changes on certification, providing recommendations for mitigation as necessary.
• Coordinate and schedule with Classification Society representatives, ship staff, and Thales Service Delivery team to schedule surveys within required timeframes.
• Participate in technical surveys onboard vessels while they are alongside, contributing to the evaluation and assessment of naval architecture and hull integrity.
• Support the Service Delivery team in managing defects and ensuring the performance integrity of AOPVs and JSS vessels.
• Collaborate with the Engineering and Supportability Teams on activities related to the development and implementation of Engineering Changes and the creation of Deviations & Waivers.

Minimum Requirements

• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Comfortable working within a team environment
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
• Student enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Program in Canadian University, with a focus in Mechanical, Electrical or Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture.
• English (Essential)

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with the preparation of technical reports
• Jira experience is an asset
• Senior Student in a Bachelor of Mechanical, Electrical or Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture Program preferred.
• Previous experience working on the AJISS program preferred

Physical Demands

• Predominantly office work but will be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
• Maybe required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting

Special Position Requirements

• Schedule: 40 hours per week
• Physical Environment: Hybrid position – a mix of working from home and onsite (in office or on board DND ships at waterfront)
• Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel maybe required in support of the ships

Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is  44,072.00 - 59,200.00 - 79,864.00 CAD Annual​. The Company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's status protected by local, provincial, and federal laws.
